AIR FORCE OFFICER QUALIFYING TEST & TEST OF BASIC AVIATION SKILLS
The Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT) is similar to the American College Test (ACT) or Standard Achievement Test (SAT) exam. Study guides are available at most bookstores and libraries. These scores are weighed heavily in the selection of candidates to interview with us. To schedule the exam, contact any Air Force or Air National Guard recruiter. If you live near Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the 114th Fighter Wing Recruiters can schedule the exam for you. You may contact the 114th Fighter Wing Recruiters at 1-800-432-0182.
The Test of Basic Aviation Skills (TBAS) is a battery of nine sub-tests administered on a computer test station that measure psychomotor skills and cognitive aptitude. The TBAS is administered throughout the country. The test is available in the local area at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska and the Minnesota Air National Guard in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In Minneapolis, contact Lance at (612) 713-2038 / DSN 783-2038 or Linda at (612) 713-2024 / DSN 783-2024. You will need to complete a worksheet and bring a copy of your college transcripts. At Offutt Air Force Base, contact (402) 294-2626 / DSN 271-2626. You will need to bring your grade point information, as well as your log book when testing at Offutt Air Force Base.
SELECTION PROCESS
Pilot selection boards are usually held once a year for the 114th Fighter Wing. The officer in charge of the pilot selection process is the 175th Fighter Squadron Commander. The board will select a primary and an alternate candidate (depending on current needs; more than one primary candidate may be selected). If you are selected for pilot training, you will be scheduled to return to Joe Foss Field, South Dakota for a physical exam and to begin necessary paperwork. If the physical is approved, your package will be sent to higher headquarters for approval and assignment of a school date. Normally, you will go to flight screening and officer training, which is located at the Academy of Military Science, McGhee-Tyson Air National Guard Base, Tennessee within one (1) year of selection and pilot training within one and a half (1 1/2) to two (2) years following selection.
