Involvement

Operation Patriotism - Members of the South Dakota Air National Guard support and promote a nationwide policy of Americanism and an endeavor to motivate a spirit of love and appreciation for God and country. This endeavor is accomplished with the presentation of colors at community, civic and military functions; marching in parades; historical flag presentations; teaching flag etiquette and respect to our youth; rendition of the National Anthem and/or Pledge of Allegiance; and providing military honors at funerals to pay last respects to our brothers and sisters in arms.

Shop with a Cop
- Since 1996 the 114th Security Forces Squadron has participated in the nationwide "Shop with a Cop" program, which is sponsored locally by Kmart. Kmart distributes cards to approximately 30 children from the local area; each card contains $20 with which the children can purchase whatever they wish. Some want the toy of their dreams while others choose to buy for family or friends. Santa is also on hand and each child receives a special gift from him. This program gives 114th Security Forces Squadron members a chance to be involved in our local community and help some underprivileged children. Not only are the children filled with happy and lasting memories, but unit members are as well. To see the smiles on these children's faces, has a lasting affect on all who have participated.

Sioux Falls Regional Blood Bank
- The South Dakota Air National Guard has gone above and beyond the call of duty in its support of the Sioux Falls Regional Blood Bank. For the past three years the unit has been the top contributor for Bloodmobile drives, and has donated more than 2,500 pints of blood over the past six years. Holding the maximum number of drives allowed by the calendar, the South Dakota Air National Guard was recognized in May, 2001 at the annual Sioux Falls Regional Blood Bank Donor Recognition Luncheon for its outstanding contributions to the Bloodmobile Program; in 2000 unit members donated 538 pints of blood.

StarBase
- StarBase is designed to help at-risk children improve their math and science skills in order to prepare for careers in engineering and other science-related fields. Drug abuse prevention, health, self-esteem and life skills are also part of the StarBase program. Through the Air National Guard-sponsored program, unit members have the opportunity to help the youth of our community improve their lives and set a course for a brighter future.

The Banquet - The South Dakota Air National Guard has been serving an evening meal at The Banquet for the past four years. Monies to purchase food for the meal is raised by asking unit members for cash donations. On the day of our serving, members prepare and serve the meal to approximately 400 people. The South Dakota Air National Guard has enjoyed their experiences of assisting the Banquet staff and meeting its guests.
