114th FW works backwards to prepare

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --  The 114th Fighter Wing Logistics Plans office works behind the scenes during the pre-deployment process to ensure Airmen are ready and prepared to deploy.

"We provide the structure and organization for the pre-deployment process," said 1st Lt. Joshua Nelson, 114th Fighter Wing installation deployment officer.

Logistics plans staff receive the tasking for upcoming deployments and they then initiate the steps for preparation.

"Once we receive the tasking, we work backwards from the date our Airmen need to be in theatre," said Nelson.

Two hundred and forty days prior to arrival at the deployed location, also known as arriving in theatre, they begin setting deadlines.  Immunizations, briefings, ordering uniforms and equipment are all common pre-deployment tasks.  Additionally at this time, site visits and manpower requirements are accomplished.

"Our manning could decrease or increase depending on the base's facilities and equipment," said Chief Master Sgt. Michael Dellman, logistics plans NCOIC.

Then, 180 days before the deployment, logistics plans personnel contact Air Combat Command and National Guard Bureau to arrange the transportation for the Airmen and all the equipment being deployed.

"To ensure that every Airman is prepared and the right equipment is packed, six months is a realistic time frame," said Dellman.

Although this is done months in advance, the Air National Guard is capable of deploying with only 72-hours notice.  Logistics Planners are responsible for putting plans in place to move people, cargo and any military asset needed. In short, whether they are shipping a pallet of equipment, a team of people or a squadron of aircraft and all associated materiel off on a deployment... the planners figure out how to get it there with as little airlift support as possible, as soon as possible.
